Same Kind of Different As Me: A Book Review

Ever since I was a young girl I have always had a deep desire to be the hands and feet of God. It’s something that we all should strive for, but sometimes I would find myself becoming a bit discouraged. You always hear people talking about finding their “true purpose in life.” It’s something that I pray to God for often–guidance into my true purpose. The amazing true story Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore has taught me a great lesson about true service for the Lord and finding your purpose in life.

Denver Moore is a true modern day slave; he picked cotton for “the man” up until the late 1960s in return for a small shack to live in. He had never earned a penny for his work and had also never attended a day of school. After Denver finally decided to hop a train out of there, he found himself surviving on the streets of Fort Worth, Texas.

Ron Hall is a very wealthy upscale art broker that has a great obsession with having only the newest and nicest things. As Ron buried himself in material things, his wife Deborah buried herself in the pursuit of God. After great trials in their marriage and counseling the two find themselves more in tune with each other than ever before. Deborah’s great passion for answering the call of God leads them to volunteering once a week at the Union Gospel Mission in Fort Worth.

The book brings you through the lessons Ron and Denver learn as their two very different lives diverge into one very special friendship. In the beginning Ron believed that he was making a difference in Denver’s life by showing him material things and taking him to meals at fancy restaurants. Little did he know that Denver would be the one teaching him life lessons and showing him the true love of God during the most difficult time of Ron’s life.

Although she is not an author of the book, the story captures Deborah’s life as well. She is the one that teaches me a great lesson about serving the Lord. Deborah is a woman of great integrity that I will now strive to be. Through the book you see that your life’s purpose doesn’t have to be something huge! God has put each and every one of us on this earth to make an impact, and you may be doing it right now without even knowing it. You may never find out your true purpose while you’re here on earth, just like Deborah. All that matters is that you spread God’s love to every person you meet, even if its that bum on the street corner, this will fill your true life purpose.

Same Kind of Different As Me is a true story that will have you laughing and crying, but ultimately it makes you realize the power of God’s love with every turn of the page. I must warn you though, once you start reading this book you won’t want to put it down.

Our last FRG had a book club that read this book. It was not one that I would have picked up, but am so glad that we read it and discussed it as a group. Those who haven’t read it should. Very thought provoking and beautifully written.
